Principle of Olomana School

Welcome to Olomana School. We are a small school serving at-risk Windward District students and the detained/incarcerated youth of the state. Our six physically separate sites provide educational services to a daily census of about 227 to 285 students. Olomana's six sites are comprised of the Hawaii Youth Correctional Facilities'(HYCF) Secure Custody Facility (SCF); Ho'okipa (HYCF); Canoe House (HYCF) Tech. Ed.; the Olomana Youth Center (OYC); and the Detention Home Facility (DH). The DH is further divided into three distinct and by law separate programs. DH's programs include the detainment facility, the group home (Home Maluhia), and the Valid Court Order.

Barbara Fuller, our teacher-in-charge at the SCF uses the story of the starfish to symbolize each child, each teacher, each day and how it represents our efforts to be a part of "A New Beginning." If you were to ask us what our ultimate goal is, I believe in unison we would echo, 'student achievement.' If you ask us what makes us so passionate about what we do, we would reverberate... teaching at-risk youth. Mitchell Otani, Kaneohe Elementary School's principal put it this way: "Olomana's teachers teach the hard-to-teach subjects to the hard-to-teach kids." Our big 'WHY' question can be summarized and answered with one word, HOPE. In our history section we have archived highlights of successes we have been fortunate to be witness to over the years, for that is what provides us with a daily dose of HOPE.

We urge you to browse through our web site and learn more about what we do and who we are. Our SID is evolving and we expect to change items as broad as vision to as specific as action plans. Our governance structure provides the way we do things. The triangle shows the steps we will be taking to eventually celebrate operating successful standards based educational programs.
